CLYDE — A 36-year-old man was charged with attempted murder after allegedly assaulting a man with a hammer in downtown Clyde last week.
The victim, identified as 32-year-old James W. Pollard Jr., was taken to Bellevue Hospital before being transferred to the University of Toledo Medical Center, via Life Flight, according to a release from the Clyde Police Department. Pollard was in critical, but stable, condition.
While on patrol, Clyde Police Officer Erik Kessler observed a large group of people gathered around Railroad Street, near Main Street, a little after 2 a.m. As he responded, Kessler saw a red truck leave the scene quickly.
Kessler stayed on the scene with the victim, who appeared to be severely injured, according to the statement. Kessler called the red vehicle in, and a short time later, Officer Nicholas Smith and Sgt. March Roach stopped the vehicle, being driven by Mickey J. Spaulding, 36, of Bradner, on McPherson Highway.
Spaulding was charged with attempted murder and was transported to the Sandusky County Jail. He also faces charges of operating a vehicle while intoxicated, and could face more charges as the investigation continues.
The Sandusky County Sheriff’s Office and the Sandusky County EMS assisted Clyde police.
