CLYDE — Clyde City Council appointed three volunteers to serve on boards and commissions, filling some large vacancies.

During its regular meeting on Dec. 15, council appointed Sonny Workman to the City of Clyde Planning Commission and Melanie Allen and Don Stanley to the Clyde Recreation Board.

The appointment of Allen and Stanley to the recreation board means the board once again has all five seats filled. The board was down to just three members, meaning that if a member was absent from the meeting, the group did not have the necessary quorum.

Stanley was appointed to serve a full term, beginning on Jan. 1 and expiring on Dec. 31, 2020. Allen will finish the term of Jeff MacFarland, which will expire at the end of 2016.

Stanley wrote a letter to Clyde city manager Paul Fiser expressing his interest in volunteering for the recreation board.

“I have been involved in coaching both my sons in baseball and most recently basketball through the upward program at Grace Community Church,” Stanley wrote in the letter. “As my sons have progressed and moved forward my time is less and less needed on the coaching side. I would still like to be connected with this area and thought this board may be a way for me to accomplish this wish.”

Allen wrote a similar letter highlighting her qualifications to serve on the recreation board.

One of the most notable, according to Fiser, is the fact she is raising four active children.

“I got to her second sentence in her letter where she said she’s raising four children, and she had my vote then,” Fiser said. “I can’t keep track of one.

“Then you go on to see everything she’s done, and I’m certain she’ll be a great addition to the rec board.”

In addition to raising four children, Allen is a supervisor at Children Services for Sandusky County, a member of the Sandusky County Child Abuse Prevention Committee, the leader of the Sandusky County Domestic Violence Task Force and a number of other positions, according to her letter.

“I have begun to feel as though I could begin to invest more time in Clyde specifically, and I feel this may be a good place to start,” Allen said in her letter.

Workman, who has been filling an unexpired term on the planning commission for awhile now, was appointed to a full term on the commission, commencing on Feb. 1, 2016 and expiring on Jan. 31, 2021.

“Sonny has enjoyed his time that he’s had on the planning commission,” Fiser said. “I’m glad to see he’s signed up for a full term. We’re happy to have him.”
